Crossing Borders - The Colonial Nursing Association

About this blog

The research strand “Nursing and Identity: Crossing Borders” at King’s College London is part of the Centre for the Humanities and Health. This blog exists to share our ongoing research; to explore topics of relevance to nursing, colonial history and life writing; and to involve others who may have insight about colonial nurses’ experiences.

Between 1896 and 1966 the Colonial Nursing Association (later renamed the Overseas Nursing Association), recruited and placed 8,450 nurses from Britain in overseas posts. The substantial archive of material, including letters, reports and photographs, presents exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship. Our research bridges the boundaries of nursing and colonial history, travel and gender studies and life writing.

We invite you to explore the different sections of this site, in order to learn about the ONA and the work we are doing here at King’s. Feel free to get in touch with either questions or comments.
